Milestone Achieved: METC Application for SELEQT-HF Submitted!

On behalf of the principal investigators of SELEQT-HF, Jeroen Schaap and Peter van der Meer, Heart4Data is proud to announce that the METC application for SELEQT-HF has been submitted. Thanks to the participation of the pioneering centres UMCG, Amphia, Amsterdam UMC, and Catharina Ziekenhuis, the next step has been taken for this innovative registry-based randomized clinical trial (RB-RCT) investigating the effect of selenium in heart failure patients, utilizing the new infrastructure of Heart4Data.

Upon approval of the METC application, the path will be clear for the first inclusions, expected by September. From that moment, SELEQT-HF will also be open for participation by other heart failure centres. The goal is to have started in 10 centres by the end of 2025. Interested in participating as a heart failure centre in SELEQT-HF? Please contact Jeroen Schaap and Peter van der Meer.

Effect of Selenium/CoQ10 Supplement on Heart Failure

SELEQT-HF investigates the effect of Selenium/CoQ10, a safe dietary supplement with no known side effects, on repeated hospitalizations for heart failure and cardiovascular mortality in patients with chronic heart failure. This is done in collaboration with Pharma Nord. SELEQT-HF is designed as a registry-based randomized clinical trial (RB-RCT) and utilizes the new infrastructure of Heart4Data and the NHR heart failure registry. This allows for the inclusion and follow-up of a diverse group of patients without prior selection.

Use Case for Heart4Data

The goal of Heart4Data is to create a national and sustainable infrastructure for cardiovascular EHR-based, registry-based research in the Netherlands, including a sustainable heart failure registry. This linkage with the NHR registry, and thus the unlocking of real-world data from electronic health records (EHR), should enable faster and more efficient acquisition of new insights.

SELEQT-HF is one of the first RB-RCTs to utilize this infrastructure. The study thus also serves as validation and helps with further development.

Heart4Data is a consortium of the Dutch CardioVascular Alliance (DCVA) in which the NHR, together with other DCVA partners, works on an infrastructure for registry-based research. Within the DCVA, 24 research and healthcare organizations have joined forces to accelerate solutions for cardiovascular diseases. Heart4Data is funded by the Heart Foundation and ZonMw.
